In this episode of Modern Nomads, we trace Kazakhstan’s cinematic journey—from its roots as a Soviet filmmaking hub to its emergence as an international cultural force.

In Almaty, we visit Kazakhfilm, the national studio founded in the 1930s that laid the foundation for the country’s film industry.

Euronews journalist Tomiris Bilyal meets film critic Gulnara Abikeyeva to explore how Kazakh cinema blends Asian traditions with European aesthetics.

We also join action director Bauyrzhan Abishev on set as he shoots his debut feature, and visit Salem Entertainment, the company behind Patrol, a Kazakh comedy gaining popularity across Central Asia.
