Rexdan is a floating research centre involving scientists from different countries researching human impacts on the ecosystems of the Danube delta.
On the Danube Delta scientists are cooperating on internationiongal projects in the context of war in Ukraine. How do they manage to work? Project Director Lucian Georgescu talks about international cooperation at REXDAN:
"We have a research infrastructure called Rexdan, There are two parts, a mobile part and a fixed part," Georgescu says. "In total, there are 32 full-time researchers working here, but we also work with people from all over Europe, the United States and Israel. When the boat is underway, we have ten permanent places occupied by researchers. And with an autonomy of 1,000 kilometres, the researchers can develop their own projects, but the idea is also to participate in integrated projects. This is open science.
"We have two partners from Ukraine in our projects," Georgescu continues. "Our colleagues from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine help us to understand what's going on in their countries too. We have joint missions such as taking samples from the international networks in the Republic of Moldova and the Ukraine. We monitor this on an ongoing basis because we need to have sounded the alarm if something goes seriously wrong. For the moment, the Danube is not affected.
